What are the benefits of an active life?
As we told you in a previous post, the Mediterranean lifestyle is characterized by good weather and, therefore, by taking advantage of outdoor activities.
This activity explains why the Mediterranean countries have some of the longest life expectancies.
Physical exercise is important to maintain adequate physical and psychological health at all ages, but it is especially vital as we get older: together with a proper diet, it helps prevent cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, etc.
It also helps keep the mind awake and improves cognitive ability.
Of course, we can’t maintain the same level of activity at all ages, but experts recommend at a minimum:
– 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least 5 days a week
– 75 minutes a week of more intense exercise.
Moderate activity allows you to have a conversation while doing it, simply going for a walk can help us activate and maintain muscle mass.
Intense physical activity is one that does not allow you to respond to conversations easily, such as going up the stairs or swimming for a while. With this type of activity, we strengthen the muscles and gain resistance.
It is important to adapt the exercises we do to the age and possibilities of each one, but it is necessary to find a time to exercise each day and, of course, rest properly, especially in the case of children and older people, who tend to maintain styles of more sedentary life.
Those of us who are lucky enough to live in places with privileged climates have it easier than anyone else, whether they are Mediterranean, tropical… Why make excuses?
